Antique George III Scottish Flame Mahogany Sideboard 19th Century

About the Item

This is a superb antique Scottish George III flame mahogany serpentine sideboard with ebonized high-lights , circa 1780 in date. The sideboard has a shaped top with a raised gallery superstructure fitted with secret sliding doors. Below this there are three central drawers with a double depth drawer on the left-hand side. The drawers feature the original and beautiful lion's head brass handles. It is raised on elegant turned legs with ebonised highlights and is complete with working locks and key. THE BOTANICAL NAME FOR THE MAHOGANY THIS ITEM IS MADE OF IS SWIETENIA MACROPHYLLA AND THIS TYPE OF MAHOGANY IS NOT SUBJECT TO CITES REGULATION. Matching his words to his work, Sheraton designed much mahogany furniture. The qualities that impressed Sheraton are particularly evident in a distinctive pattern of wood called "flame mahogany." This is a superb antique George III inlaid flame mahogany serpentine sideboard, circa 1790 in date. With wood banding and marquetry spandrels, the central frieze drawer flanked by deep drawers, the right side drawer with divisions for bottles. The drawers fitted with the original and beautiful ormolu lion's head ring handles. It is raised on elegant square tapering legs on spade feet and is complete with working locks and key. Add an elegant touch to a special place in your home with this superb antique serpentine shaped sideboard. The botanical name for the mahogany this item is made of is Swietenia macrophylla and this type of mahogany is not subject to CITES regulation. It is crossbanded, bordered with ebony lines and fitted with a central frieze drawer above a recessed arched apron drawer.
