Burlwood Drop-Front Secretary, One of Four Produced; Båstad, Sweden, c. 1880

About the Item

Dating from around 1880, this exceptional "secrétaire à abattant" is one of four identical chests, produced by a master Swedish cabinetmaker in the city of Båstad, commissioned as wedding gifts for the four daughters of a prominent local family. This remarkable piece was sourced by Atypical Find from a descendant of the original owner, who confirmed to us that it had been passed down through generations of his family in a rare unbroken chain of provenance. Crafted with beautiful and highly figured burlwood veneers - likely birch or elm - this exquisite chest features four dovetailed drawers flanking the large secretary compartment. Inside, a central cabinet door is decorated with a stunning and highly detailed etched portrait of a young woman - presumably the daughter for whom the chest was made. The woman's graceful countenance holds court over a broad writing surface and a myriad of small storage drawers - each adorned with inlaid vines - which provide beautiful and convenient storage for any and all necessities. Though they were heavily influenced by the prevalent French styles of the time, Swedish furniture makers in the 18th and 19th Centuries nonetheless managed to carve out a distinctive style, characterized by clean Classical lines, balanced proportions, and the use of local wood species which brought rich varieties of tone and grain. This particular piece is based on the 18th Century French "secrétaire à abattant"; a form of tall chest with a flat, hinged front that falls forward to create a surface for writing or other work. Chair included. Keys included. NOTE: Dimensions refer to cabinet. The chair measures H 32" x W 19" x D 20.5" x SH 18".
