About the Item

Baroque tabernacle secretary in walnut with strapwork. Upper Bavaria Walnut Baroque around 1750 Dimensions: H x W x D: 175 x 129 x 63 cm. Description South German tabernacle writing cabinet veneered in walnut with marquetry of plum, bog oak and maple. Chest base on round squeeze feet with three-bay curved front and wrought iron carrying handles on sides. Top edge and base in solid walnut, carved and sanded to shape. The center of the three drawers contains the original heavy box lock that closes up and down, locking the other two drawers as well. This can be seen clearly in the attached video. Also, please take a look at the photo showing the latch closing downward. Isn't it beautiful and extended by the finest craftsmanship? It's details like this that always make me marvel at the skills of the craftsmen of the time. Above the dresser section, behind the slanted flap, is the writing compartment. To the left and right of the flap is a small drawer each. The writing flap is held by the original wrought iron fittings. Inside, there are three upper drawers in a row. The finial is a tabernacle compartment surrounded by eight drawers. To the left and right of the door are two additional locks that centrally lock the six outer drawers. The imposing bar locks set into the carcass are hand forged and absolutely authentic! The front marquetry is intertwined and interconnected. The individual contrasting woods are subtly accented and set off by maple thread inlays. Due to the arrangement of the top drawer, the secretary does not look squat, but light, elegant and dynamic. Things to know Derived from the chest of drawers, the top secretary developed in the 18th century. Fun Facts: Derived from the chest of drawers, the top secretary develops into a piece of representational furniture in the 18th century. Like the chest of drawers, it became an important piece of furniture in both bourgeois and courtly interior design. As a multifunctional piece of furniture, usually consisting of three parts, it represented a specialized refinement of the top commode. It consists of a commode-like lower part with drawers. More rarely, this lower part is also two-door, sometimes with cut-out knee space. The writing part, often with a slanted writing flap in many constructive and design variations, is placed on the lower part and usually slightly recedes at its front edge. Above it is the top, which occurs in two basic forms: the two-door cantourge top, which can also be a display case top, and the tabernacle top, which occurs mainly in southern Germany, with a central door compartment and flanking, multi-level rows of drawers. In terms of construction, there are two variants of the top secretary: in southern and southwestern Germany, there is mainly the three-part arrangement (à trois corps), in central Germany, but also in Lower Saxony and in the north, the two-part arrangement (à deux corps) predominates. Here, the writing part is firmly connected to the lower part. Technically, many achievements are applied. Ingenious secret compartments, concealed mechanisms, and fancy divisions are created on the writing part. Also, as a typical furniture of the 18th century, the top secretary, like the chest of drawers, develops into a representational object with decorative unfolding, which in the case of courtly representatives can become highlights of furniture construction. No epoch before and after it brings it to such a highly developed bloom, of which especially this essay furniture still bears an impressive testimony today. North Germany / Prussia Birch Biedermeier / Empire around 1815 Dimensions: H x W x D: 174 x 102 x 55 cm Description: Very exclusive secretary from the Prussian North German Biedermeier period around 1815. Piece of furniture standing on pointed legs with two drawers at the bottom, the writing flap above, another drawer above and a hidden head drawer at the very top. The piece of furniture is veneered in exciting grained birch wood. Due to the different color hangings within the wood and the interplay of hues associated with it, we also refer to it as "flamed" birch. The beautiful wood is complemented by blackened moldings and beautiful fire-gilded bronze hardware in beautiful quality. The interior of the writing compartment is veneered in apple tree. We see a stair-like rise to a central door flanked by pilasters. Drawers of different sizes and two large compartments with dividers for letters and papers complete the secretary part. Looking at the piece of furniture from above, we see an old shipping label. According to it, the secretary was loaded onto the train at the station "Odertor" in Wroclaw. The destination was probably Berin. Corresponding mmarkings we find on the back panel. Piece of furniture made in wonderful quality craftsmanship.
