18th Century Country French Neoclassical Secretary
About the Item
18th Century Country French neoclassical secretary is a splendid example of the genre, dating to the reign of Louis XVI himself! The period saw the rebirth of classical architecture and ornamentation, exemplified in this design, with tailored architecture melded with rich, hand-carved ornamentation in bas relief across the entire facade. Undoubtedly French in form, it still retains the undulating apron and scrolled legs with carved acanthus leaf and escargot feet, and there are certainly some naturalistic French stylings in the embellishments on the drawers and slant-front desktop, but the theme is truly classical with an urn bursting with flowers flanked by elegant foliate scrollwork, the latter of which appears on the three drawers below framed by intricately cast bronze drawer pulls. Even the bronze key guards exude the classical form with ribbon motif. Open the slant-front and one is greeted by a generous work surface newly fitted with faux leather by our expert in-house staff. Into the casework one sees cubby holes galore, with a "secret" compartment between the faux leather and cubby holes for extra-secure storage. Hand-crafted from dense, old-growth white oak to last for centuries!
