Shanghai Art Deco Vanity Cabinet, c. 1930s
About the Item
In the 1930s, Shanghai, China was swept up in the Art Deco design movement. Design, architecture, art, fashion, and furniture were all influenced by this modern movement, permeating every part of life in the bustling, vibrant city. A product of the era, this tiered vanity cabinet embodies the harmonious blend of East meets West that came to define Shanghai Art Deco forms.
This glamorous Shanghai Deco vanity intrigues with an asymmetrical design and beautifully worked surface decoration. Expertly crafted of blackwood (hongmu), a fine hardwood appreciated for its dense grain and alluring, dark brown color, the small cabinet balances an angular silhouette with the soft contours of hand-carved details. The doors are embellished with vertical reeding and low relief carvings of fruit and foliage.
Originally used as a bedroom vanity with an accompanying mirror, the cabinet opens to reveal an ample interior with two sliding shelves, three drawers and a narrow, vertical compartment. Today, this gorgeous Art Deco vanity finds its place in the modern home as a statement dresser, linen press or bar cabinet.

Beautiful lacquered burgundy with gold leaf details, the interior is fitted with glassware shelves and a single pull out shelf. Working key is present.
This circa 1930s restored storage cabinet in manner of Emile Jacques Ruhlmann would work great in an Art Deco, Hollywood Regency, Post-Modern or Mid-Century Modern home or penthouse apartment but could also look fantastic in a Contemporary, Space Age Mod, Scandanavian Modern, Danish Modern or Zen / Minimalist room. Firstly, let's talk about its history.
It was produced most likely in 1939 in Mariano Comense which is a small village near Milan by the artist Giuseppe Anzani.

Later on, he started also to master the art of wood inlay, becoming the most skilled inlayer of all times. His fame was so big that people from all over the world used to come to his little laboratory in the small and unknown village...
