Rare Antique English Regency Rosewood Davenport with Spring-Loaded Pen Drawer

About the Item

This wonderful early 19th century Antique English Rosewood and ebonized Davenport or Ship Captain's Desk is one of the finest we've had in recent years. Davenports or Ship Captain's Desks are so-named originally for a Captain Davenport for whom a similarly styled desk was made in the latter part of the 18th century. These were very utilitarian due to the fact that space was at a premium so their compact yet comprehensive components were a valuable asset to a small cabin upon a ship. The design of this Davenport is extraordinary and is not one of the later 19th century "revival" ones, but from the Regency period (late Georgian). The fact that it is made of rosewood is also rare and important. The interior reveals gorgeous flame or crotch mahogany while the interior drawer fronts are veneered in superb burr walnut with their original bone handles. The side drawer to the upper right and left side reveal an additional slide out writing area. The remaining rosewood drawers to the right side are a graduated set of workable drawers, all hand dovetailed and made of mahogany as their secondary wood with handsome, original ebonized round handles. They extend the entire width of the desk. The remaining drawers along the left side are faux drawers, other than the top pull-out sliding writing drawer. The secret of this fabulous desk is in the spring-loaded pen drawer which is flush along the top of the right side. When the knob of the interior lower right drawer is pulled, it releases a spring-loaded drawer which pops out to reveal a fitted, original pen drawer (see video). The components of the architecture of the desk appear ebonized and of superior quality. The leather writing surface is old but obviously not original (likely replaced in the past fifty years). The underside of the writing slope evidences a stable shrinkage crack which is completely age-appropriate, but mentioned for accuracy. In addition to good still images, there is an uploaded video. The condition is excellent and age-appropriate.
