Vintage 1949 Mid-Century Modern Custom L-Shaped Office Desk by George Nelson
Located in Lafayette, IN
This remarkable piece is a one-off desk/wardrobe/bar/bookcase/storage cabinet custom-designed by George Nelson in 1949 to match his Basic Cabinet Series (BCS) for Herman Miller. The desk was made specifically for a client in the Promontory Apartment Building in Chicago designed by Nelson's associate, and world-renowned architect, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. The entire apartment was outfitted in pieces from George Nelson's Basic Cabinet Series for Herman Miller that sat, untouched for nearly 70 years in their original setting! In addition to two aluminium sconces, this piece also features hidden, fluorescent lighting mounted in the upper canopy as a clever solution to Mies van der Rohe's lack of ceiling fixtures. This is a gorgeous, grandiose, and extremely rare piece of design history that will instantly outfit an entire office in striking style!
Features:
Desk:
- Book-matched walnut veneer
- Built-in Bar
- Built in coat closet/wardrobe
- Dual aluminum sconces
- Hidden, indirect fluorescent lighting
- Silver-plated Herman Miller hardware
- Dual "floating" book shelves
- Tapered, cantilevered peninsula desk...

1968 Executive Desk
Located in Hanover, MA
SATURDAY SALE
Executive desk formerly belonging to noted architect George M. Notter, (1933–2007) of the Boston firm Anderson Notter Finegold (now known as Finegold Alexander Architects).
Current institutional memory at the firm suggests it was a special order from Herman Miller for the then new New York offices of MGM, however Herman Miller's archivist was unable to confirm.
Styling, particularly the distinctive slim milled aluminum tracks through which the entire drawer carriage glides is clearly similar to Warren Platner's designs for Lehigh-Leopold which were then among the most costly of executive office furnishings. The bent flat bar chromed steel base with its distinctive pigeon toe splay is somewhat similar to a table base in Stow Davis' Electa Series, designed by Alexis Yermakov circa 1971. Walnut laminate top is very clean with no issues. One one corner edge shows a small separation.
The only identifying markings are within the milled aluminum channel:
G.P.
F.I.
2
And the date Dec. 20, 1968.
See image 18.
Between the rectangular laminate top and the chrome base is a heavy blackened steel plate. Underneath the bent chrome pigeon toe feet are bars of a thick phenolic material which act as floor protector.
We can have keys made to fit the two locking drawers.
Tim Anderson...

BBPR for Olivetti 1960 Green Modernist Desk with Black Accents and Side Bureau
By Studio BBPR, Olivetti
Located in New York, NY
Italian Mid-Century Modern complete desk, by Olivetti, designed by Studio BBPR: Ernesto Nathan Rogers (1901-1969) Enrico Peressutti (1908-1976) Barbiano di Belgiojoso (1909-2004) Gian Luigi Banfi (1910-1945) enameled metal desk "Spazio" designed by Olivetti. This 1960 design with its synthesis of styles and materials anticipated post-modernism by over 20 years and won in 1962 the Compasso d'Oro, industrial design award originated in Italy in 1954 from an idea of Gio Ponti and Alberto Rosselli.
This one is particularly rare as it has its coordinated detachable side bureau and its adjustable desk spotlight. The main desk enameled in light lime green has 3 side drawers, the side one has 8 small sliding drawers. The writing surfaces are protected by a clear glass that has preserved the green felt. Considering the age, the condition is excellent, only 2 corners show signs of wear due to the attachment of the desk lamp. This design has also been exhibited at the Moma in New York. A very interesting functional collector piece.
Stamped: Olivetti Arredamenti Metallici "Spazio".
Measures: Larger desk only...
