About the Item

We are delighted to offer for sale this stunning near pair of original Victorian heavily hand carved oak library bookcase cabinets made by the world famous firm of Gillows of Lancaster & London If you are in the market for the finest pair of English library bookcases then look no further, these are expertly crafted and exceptionally fine. The carving to the tops is some of the nicest and most decorative I have ever seen. These pieces came from Longstowe Hall which is one of the great English country houses, prior to that they were retailed in a Chelsea Antiques store where they were fully restored to gallery condition One piece has the original Gillows Lancaster black metal plate stamp as pictured, the other has Gillows Lancaster stamped locks. Both have height adjustable and removable shelves They are basically the same however one has William & Mary style tear drop handles in brass, the other has more ornate double mermaid with a central lion handles in bronze, the only other difference is one is slightly deeper than the other Condition wise they were as mentioned fully restored prior to their arrival and Longstowe hall, they have seen some light age and use related patination over the years, we have cleaned waxed and polished them from top to bottom Dimensions Height:- 200cm & 200cm Width:- 159cm & 159cm Depth:- 60.5cm & 47.5cm Please note all measurements are taken at the widest point This item is available for collection from our Pulborough warehouses Condition Please view the very detailed pictures as they form part of the description pertaining to the condition. Please note vintage period and original items such as leather seating will always have natural patina in the form of creasing and wear, we recommend annual waxing to ensure no moisture is lost, also hand dyed leather is not recommended to sit in direct sunlight for prolonged periods of time as it will dry out and fade.

Restored Metamorphic Antique Regency Armchair to Library Steps Gillows Lancaster
By Gillows of Lancaster & London
Located in West Sussex, Pulborough
We are delighted to offer this very large and collectable fully restored Regency circa 1810-1820 metamorphic armchair which converts into Library steps after the original 18th century design by Gillows of Lancaster. This wonderful piece of English history has been on a journey of restoration, the frame has been washed back and French polished by a Victorian trained polisher, the leather upholstery has been stripped back, hand dyed six times, antiqued and sealed, it has a lovely rich reddish brown colour to it. This chair is larger than any other of its type you would have seen, it is a important and extremely expensive looking thing that commands attention in any setting. The original made by Gillows can currently be viewed in the Victorian & Albert museum, below is an extra from their listing. The period 1800-1825 was a great one for ‘patent’ or ‘metamorphic’ furniture This chair, which transforms into a short set of steps for use with bookshelves, is close to a design for a ‘Library Chair’ published in Rudolph Ackermann’s Repository of the Arts in July 1811, which was made by the London firm of Morgan and Saunders, of Catherine Street, Strand. They were well known for their ingenious furniture, including reading chairs with writing surfaces attached and a great variety of travelling beds...

Located in London, GB
Each crossbanded in rosewood, with four graduating shelves, with turned tapering reeded supports, brass caps and casters. The pair of bookcases have recessed reeded columns in the Pompeian manner and are framed by ‘ribboned’ rosewood. In 1801, Gillows of London and Lancaster supplied a closely related pair of bookcases to Luke Dillon, 2nd Lord Clonbrock to furnish his new library at his ancestral home, Clonbrock in Co. Galway. They were sold by Mr. and Mrs Luke Dillon-Mahon, Clonbrock, Christie’s house sale, 1st November 1976, Lot 12. The fashionable ‘moving bookcase’ of this type featured in Thomas Sheraton’s Appendix to the Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer’s Drawing Book, 1802 (pl.23).
