Japanese Antique Large Tansu 1860s-1900s / Sideboard Wabi Sabi

About the Item

This account consists of five companies. As for me, I specialize in carefully selected Japanese antiques. With my 20 years of experience as a buyer, I will re-propose Japanese antiques from a new point of view. This is a very old large Tansu made in Japan. It is a furniture of Meiji era (1860's-1900's). The material is cedar wood. The design is ultimately simple and lean. This simplicity embodies Japan. The lattice sliding doors create shadows and beautiful scenes. It has been used and darkened and shined, giving it a tasteful texture. We have carefully and meticulously maintained the product so as not to spoil its beautiful, timeworn appearance. The sliding doors were made to open and close smoothly. The entire furniture has been disinfected with water. You can use it with peace of mind. The furniture is in very good condition for its age, with no insect infestation. This furniture evokes the spirit of “wabi-sabi,” the Japanese philosophy of finding beauty in imperfection and impermanence. It is modest, humble, and unconventional, a beauty that is the opposite of vulgarity. It is a unique and very rare piece of furniture. It weighs approximately 50 kg. Since ancient times, people have created and passed down necessary tools from familiar materials and nurtured a lifestyle culture in order to survive in the severe struggle against nature. By using these objects over a long period of time, they accumulate a flavor and reflect a way of life. In today's world, where cheap and disposable items are encouraged, the act of repeatedly re-creating things around us by modifying them opens up a new world. With this philosophy in mind, we collect beautiful, powerful, and unique carefully selected antiquities from Japan.
