Jacaranda Commode, 18th Century Portuguese

About the Item

A superb 18th century Portuguese chest of drawers in jacaranda with three large drawers. Hand cast bronze handles and keyhole escutcheons depict birds, perhaps phoenixes, surrounded by intricate floral designs. Cropped skirts display hand carved shells and foliage branches. Carved pilasters at the sides with detailed scrollwork, florals and other ornamental designs lead the eye down to claw and ball feet. Gently curving lines add to the sophistication of this piece and are characteristic of the Portuguese interpretation of rococo style.
