Chest / Side table by Zanine CALDAS, Denouncia Period, 1970

About the Item

A chest by José Zanine Caldas from the Denouncia period, 1970. Carved from a single-piece tree trunk, the body and lid have been hollowed out to reveal the wood grain. A piece of wood is added to the center of the trunk, the central part being the tree's sap, less solid as it dries over time. Caldas has inserted a piece of wood using traditional joinery techniques. A similar model is shown in the designer-architect's monograph. The trunk can be used as a side table or as a display unit.
