Antique baroque chest of drawers from the 18th century Middle Germany Walnut Baroque around 1760 Dimensions: H x W x D: 78 x 106 x 63 cm Description: Three-bowl piece of furniture standing on squeeze feet. Multiple curved and buckled furniture front with solid base and plate edge. The drawers are veneered in walnut with three ash framed fields each in walnut burl. Fielding in the same manner is also seen on the sides and top panel. Clean and contemporary quality craftsmanship. Fun Facts: The chest of drawers, usually equipped with stacked drawers, largely replaced the chest in the middle-class household at the beginning of the 18th century. To better understand the development of the chest of drawers, it is necessary to examine the drawer and its significance on earlier furniture. An early use for the drawer is found in the Renaissance double cabinet. The understanding of using drawers for storage is limited to the storage of precious objects, small utensils, or items that were given special attention and deposited separately from the usual items used in the household. The drawer has a long way to go before it is used as a storage container. Initially hidden behind doors, it was not until the cabinet cabinets of the late 17th century that the drawer appeared as an independent, constructive element whose front also had a design function. Still, it serves only to store objects of high value or special importance. It was only with the separate storage of linen and clothing that the drawer took on more mundane functions. This finally leads to the development of the chest of drawers as an independent piece of furniture, which in the 18th century also becomes increasingly important for interior design and is increasingly the focus of the creative attention of craftsmen. The chest of drawers quickly became widespread and turned into a decorative technical challenge for carpenters, wood sculptors and metal craftsmen.
