Tibetan Pegam Prayer Table, c. 1850

About the Item

This unusual 19th-century low cabinet is a distinctive form of Tibetan furniture known as a pegam or book chest. Used in the personal chambers of Tibetan monks or as an altar surface in mediation spaces, pegam cabinets are defined by their small scale, scalloped top railing and lavishly painted decoration. This example is hand-painted with an allover design of peony blossoms and trailing vines, rendered in a moody palette of dark red, green and gold. Six square panels comprise the cabinet front, each bearing a round green medallion of gold florals. The central two panels hinge open to reveal a specious interior without an inner shelf. A storied example of folk artistry, this Tibetan pegam table is ideal today as an unexpected side table piled high with books or elevating a houseplant.
