Spanish Colonial Cabinets

SPANISH COLONIAL STYLE

After the conquest of Mexico in 1521 and the Philippines in 1565, Spain dictated a global culture. The colonization of territories in the Americas, Western Europe, Africa, Oceania and the Pacific imposed the values of Spain, including Catholicism, while the extraction of resources reinforced the empire’s wealth and power. Unlike many styles that came out of European colonialism, such as British Colonial, Spanish Colonial furniture and architecture frequently mixed local heritage with the artistic traditions of Spain.

Spanish Colonial furniture was informed by the shifting styles of Europe as well as Indigenous culture. There were Inca tapestries depicting Spanish coats of arms and Baroque chairs adorned with tropical flora. The butaca, a low easy chair popular in the Caribbean, was inspired by Rococo’s curving forms and the shape of precolonial seating. In New Mexico, Pueblo artisans carved chests with patterns reminiscent of Anasazi art.

Even within the homes of the wealthy, furniture was usually restricted to necessities like benches, desks, cupboards and chests. These were often ornately designed and especially important for storing prized goods like textiles. Spanish Colonial houses were built with adobe and clay and tended to be minimally decorated, so the style’s heavily carved wooden furniture pieces stood out against a home’s white stucco walls.

The Spanish Colonial period mostly came to an end after the territories achieved independence from Spain. However, its aesthetics continued to influence Southwestern style and Spanish Colonial Revival style after Spanish Colonial style was used extensively at San Diego’s 1915 Panama-California Exposition.

18C Mexican/Texan Bargueno Style Chest on Stand
Located in Dallas, TX
PRESENTING A STUNNING AND IMPORTANT piece of North American, Texan, HISTORIC furniture, namely, an 18C Mexican/Texan Bargueno Style Chest on Stand. This is one of the MOST INTRUIGING pieces we have seen in years! Made of pine, maple and walnut this piece’s design is based upon the ‘classic’ Spanish Bargueno (Vargueno) Chest style. It consists of a chest made of pine, maple and walnut on a solid pine stand. The top section, namely the ‘Bargueno Section’, sits neatly, onto the rectangular pine base and lifts off, making it 2 pieces. The chest has 2 decorated doors to the front, that are Gothic in style with various panels. The 2 front doors open outwards to reveal a very plain interior set of pine drawers, in various sizes, with walnut knobs. 11 drawers in total, with one larger square one in the center. On each side of the chest there are two wrought iron (unmistakably 18th Century) handles, for carrying the top section of the piece. The lock is also unmistakably 18th Century and appears to be very similar to ‘Spanish locks’ of the day. The hinges are later replacements (most likely, late 20th Century judging by the screws). The two lever latches on the interior of the left door are, more likely, early 20th Century, circa 1910. Some minor restorations, namely, to the hardware as stated above and the walnut buttons, on the front doors, are more recent replacements for the original buttons that were originally on the piece, but a number had been lost. The pine base or stand, has a heavily carved front board (in the Spanish style of carving) and has all the signs of genuine ageing. It is constructed with wooden pegs and the leg supports show signs of hundreds of years of rubbing and wear. Also, the wood in parts exhibits signs of petrification which one would expect to see with a REALLY OLD piece of pine furniture. WE ARE OF THE OPINION THAT THIS PIECE WAS NOT MADE IN SPAIN, BUT IN COLONIAL SPANISH AMERICA. WE ALSO BELIEVE THAT IT COULD EVEN POSSIBLY HAVE BEEN MADE IN TEXAS...
