George II Mahogany Bureau Cabinet Bookcase
Located in Lymington, GB
An elegant 18th-century mahogany bureau cabinet of impressive architectural form, and lovely rich colour.
George II-period, circa 1740.
The top surmounted by a bold architectural pediment and centred by a brass finial. The two arched panel doors reveal three adjustable shelves which have candle slides below them. Furthermore the bureau section is fitted with a stepped interior. This has two secret compartments, drawers and pigeon holes, and the fall is conventionally supported on two lopers. Lined in the best quality English oak.
The blind doors of this Georgian cabinet have well figured mahogany panels of very good colour which reflect beautifully in the candle light.
The chamfered and arched doors display a further level of sophistication and quality. The beautifully drawn arched pediment is in perfect proportion with the rest of the cabinet/ bookcase.
In excellent condition overall.
Architectural furniture designs on the continent commenced with the arrival of the Renaissance, and they have their origins in Roman and Greek architecture.
Nb. We often refer to antique bookcases / cabinets as ''secretary desks'' in the US.
Bureau bookcases display books, china or silver behind glazed doors, but are described more accurately as bureau cabinets when they are fitted with blind doors.

Near Pair of 9' Georgian Style Mütter Museum Mahogany Library Display Cabinets
Located in Philadelphia, PA
A very fine, very tall near pair of late Georgian (or Neoclassical) style bookcases or cabinets.
By repute, these cabinets were designed for and actively used by the Mütter Museum in Philadelphia, PA. They seem to have been used from the 19th into the early part of the 20th century. They vary slightly in their dimensions and comprise a near pair.
The scale of these cabinets or bookcases is enormous. They are impressive in their presence and require a large, high-ceilinged space to highlight their exceptional scale.
They seem to have had several alterations throughout their existence and use in the museum. They may well be made of wall mounted cabinets (with a desk or writing platform separating them) that were reconstructed into free standing cabinets in the late 19th or early 20th century.
Each cabinet has a curved cornice top that rests atop a cabinet section with doors that open inward towards a medial stretcher. Each door has 8 glass panes for a total of 16 glass panes (or lights) per cabinet. The top panels have arches. Each top section rests on a base with paneled doors and a stepped foot.
The antique glass panes...

George II Burr/Burl Walnut Caddy Topped Chest, circa 1730-1740
By Giles Grendey
Located in Oxfordshire, United Kingdom
An important George II burr walnut caddy topped chest, circa 1730-1740. With firm attribution to Giles Grendey.
The 'caddy' moulded quarter veneered and feather-banded burr walnut top sits above a cock-beaded brushing slide, over four long graduating drawers, each cross banded, feather-banded and book-matched in choice cuts of burr walnut veneer. The chest is raised on original bracket feet and leather-wrapped brass castors. Similarly, the sides are book-matched in choice cuts of figured walnut.
It should be noted that chests such as this are extremely rare and rarer still to retain all brass furniture, locks, feet and not forgetting well patinated original surfaces.
Giles Grendey was born at Wooton-under-Edge in Gloucestershire in 1693. His workshop was at Aylesbury House, St. John’s Square, Clerkenwell, London and is most famously known to have supplied an order to the duke of Infantado for his castle of Lazcano in Spain.
