Fabulous 1950-1960’s Scandinavian Modern teak 2 drawer low bench, dresser, cabinet, or credenza attributed to Arne Wahl Iversen for vintage IKEA. This piece has been attributed based upon archived research including online sources, vintage documentation and catalogs, designer literature, and other materials however it is not signed or marked in any way. Beautiful condition, keeping in mind that this is vintage and not new so will have signs of use and wear. We have repaired/filled some nicks & dings. It has small scratches as you would expect, and it has a fresh coat of Danish oil. Please see photos and zoom in for details. We attempt to portray any imperfections. Circa, 1950-1960’s.
There are cabinets… and then there are MARVELOUS, not to mention VERSATILE cabinets like this Scandinavian Modern teak low dresser, cabinet, credenza, or bench cabinet Attributed to Arne Wahl Iversen for Vintage IKEA. This handsome vintage cabinet is comprised of a gorgeous teak frame with stunning wood grain, straight square tapered legs and two drawers featuring wonderful round rosewood handles. You know, IKEA tends to get a bad rap in the design world. However, vintage, and collectible IKEA pieces can now be worth thousands of dollars… so who knows… if you own some current IKEA pieces, you may have a goldmine to leave to your grandchildren someday! He who laughs last laughs the longest/best…. LOL! You get the meaning! At any rate, this is an INCREDIBLE cabinet and it’s bursting with versatility, impeccable style, and ample storage. It could be used as a wonderful low dresser in a bedroom, a fantastic credenza in a living or dining area, a marvelous bench cabinet in a hall or entry, or in any room that needs cabinet with a touch of quintessential Scandinavian Modern flair. It’s EXACTLY what the designer ordered!
Arne Wahl Iversen was a noted Danish furniture designer who followed in his father’s footsteps as a designer with his own shop in Nyborg which is just west of Copenhagen. He created elegant and functional furniture using high quality techniques and craftsmanship. In 1957 he began his collaboration with Ingvar Kamprad, who founded IKEA in 1943 in the Swedish market. He only designed a short time for Kamprad, but he went on to produce furniture for many factories around Denmark, but he was probably best known for his pieces designed and manufactured at Komfort and Vinde Mobelfabrik. His No. 92 bedroom for Vinde Mobelfabrik was on exhibit at a fair in Geneva where ironically Prince Rainier of Monaco and his wife actress Grace Kelly were in attendance, and when they saw it, they immediately ordered their own! This contributed to his bedroom furniture taking off in the United States. Arne Wahl Iversen actively continued to design until his death in 2016.

Arne Wahl Iversen
Danish furniture designer Arne Wahl Iversen created a range of sculptural storage cabinets, secretary desks, armchairs and dressers in teak, rosewood and other durable woods that reflect the pared-back elegance and prioritization of function that are so often attributes of the finest examples of vintage Scandinavian modern furniture.
Born in Nyborg, Iversen learned the craft of furniture making from his father, who operated a modest furniture business near the family home. Iversen apprenticed as a cabinetmaker and later enrolled in the Odense Technical School to study furniture design. In 1949, Iversen attend the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, in Copenhagen. It was there he studied under legendary furniture designer Kaare Klint. Widely recognized as the father of modern Danish furniture, Klint helped found the furniture design school at the academy and mentored such esteemed cabinetmakers and furniture designers as Børge Mogensen, Hans Wegner and Ole Wanscher. Iversen was in good hands.
Upon finishing school, Iversen opened his own furniture shop in Nyborg. Soon after, his work immediately impressed Swedish furniture maker and IKEA founder Ingvar Kamprad.
At the time, the popularity of modern Danish furniture was gaining steam around the world — it was in the postwar era that American tastemakers sold the citizenry on the appeal of Scandinavian design and its emphasis on the principles of traditional craftsmanship. Copenhagen native Finn Juhl had shown his work in the United States in 1950 and created a Danish modern line for Michigan’s Baker Furniture in 1951 (the company produced his award-winning Chieftain chair for a short time). Kamprad was eager for Iversen to create modern Danish furniture for IKEA, but their collaboration didn't last very long. Iversen decided to work independently on his own designs.
Initially, Iversen's furniture was mainly sold in Denmark, but by the end of the 1960s, he had expanded his sales to the rest of Europe and in America. Though he designed for many manufacturers, he created his most popular works for Komfort and Vinde Møbelfabrik. Iversen continued to design furniture until he retired in the mid-1980s.

Beautiful condition, keeping in mind that this is vintage and not new so will have signs of use and wear. There are a couple of small darker spots on the top. The top drawers open from the bottom, and the bottom drawers open from the top! It’s a simple but oh-so-stunning detail. Kai Kristiansen was born in 1929 in Denmark. His approach to design was, and still is colored by his outlook on life with his constant search of “getting as much as possible out of as little as possible.” A phrase he uses to this day is “Economy, ecology, and common sense.” He was taught and trained as a cabinetmaker by a Danish design role model Kaare Klint.
