18th Century Country French Buffet À Deux Corps or Cupboard

About the Item

An 18th century Louis XV style country French buffet a' deux corps from Normandy made of solid hand carved oak. This was a traditional bridal gift, brought by the groom to the new house and has many romantic motifs. Beautifully detailed, three dimensional hand carvings include a pair of lovebirds surrounded by an of flower wreath beneath the chapeau de gendarme crown. The doors have the original glass panes and are decorated with flower bouquets, branches and swags. Carved musical instruments, lutes and horns, divide the panes. The glass cabinet opens to an interior lined with printed floral fabric and has two 13.5" deep shaped shelves with grooves at the back to display plates. The buffet has two doors decorated with carved flowers and opens to a single 18" deep shelf and has two dovetailed drawers to store silverware. Original iron hardware includes decorative escutcheons with heart shaped cut-outs, working locks and two keys. Waxed patina. Exceptional craftsmanship. The left glass door pane has a small crack in the lower right corner. The feet of the buffet were cut down by the previous owner and the parts were retained for future restoration if needed.
