About the Item
A Rare Small Regency Mahogany Secretaire Bookcase by Gillows of Lancaster
This very rare small sized figured mahogany secretaire bookcase has been beautifully made in the Regency workshops of Gillows, Lancaster, England. It is stamped Gillows Lancaster on the edge of the drawer. The bookcase stands on a plinth base with a single cupboard above fitted for large books. It has a mahogany framed door with carved detailing and a brass grill with a yellow pleated silk panel. To each side, there is a turned column with carved Grecians capitals. The drawer is veneered in flame mahogany with applied finely carved decoration with two matching knobs. It drawers out and folds down to reveal an extremely well fitted burr oak veneered interior with eight drawers and pigeon holes with bone knobs. The writing surface is inlaid with hand-tooled leather. The bookcase above has matching columns with a single glazed door with similar carved detail. The inside has three adjustable shelves for books and above is a plain moulded and veneered cornice, circa 1830.
