Rare and Magnificent Neoclassical Mahogany Bibliotheque Bookcase

About the Item

A rare and magnificent neoclassical mahogany three door bookcase dating to the second half of the 19th century. Resting on a large plinth, the bookcase has three large frame doors with parallel detached moldings over a metal trellis work, backed up with ochre coloured velvet and flanked on the corners by a pair of tapering mahogany herms topped with sideways looking gilt bronze female busts in the Empire style. Under the concave shaped top a frieze applied with a gilt bronze Vitruvian scroll connects both finely shaped gilt busts. In between the doors are elegant half columns discretely decorated with gilt bronze rings to complete the delicate design. The inside construction and back panels are executed in finest quality oak and the mahogany on the outside has taken an overall lovely honey – coloured patina to bear witness of times gone by. The design of this bookcase is quite unique and seems to combine the neoclassical style of Thomas Hope with French Empire taste as emulated by the Parisian furniture makers Jacob. It was probably created in Belgium where quality furniture making knew its heyday from the mid 19th century up to World War I thanks to industrialisation and Fine tropical woods imported from the Congo. The bookcase has nine adjustable shelves in oak.
