The open shelved English display cabinet or bookcase, circa 1890 of oak features a bold array of well carved motifs. Please note the pair of bold lion heads that flank the open interior located slightly beneath the top. The single lion heads are surrounded by a sculpted frieze of scrolls and flourishes across the front and sides. The vertical supports below each lion head are also carved with a great sense of depth and realism incorporating another animal head as well as fully formed fruits. The use of the lion heads and lush natural forms of fruit and leaves refers to the power and bounty of the natural world while the decorative pattern seen on the sides and the frieze has an architectural reference that is man made. This antique English bookcase stands upon slightly elevated feet that are set in a stepped fashion with a three level apron featuring more carved motifs. All of the fully modeled carving was chosen for its effect when lighted from the front and sides to make a dramatic impact and frame the objects and books displayed upon the adjustable shelves. Please notice how even the front edge of each shelf is embellished with similar carving as the body of the piece to create a unified whole. At some point the interior of the cabinet was painted to enhance the contrast between the carved oak and the objects displayed upon the painted surface as seen in the accompanying photographs. The shallow depth of this English antique display cabinet is especially notable and makes it desirable where space is at a premium.
