About the Item

Sculptural iconic model S31A stool designed by Pierre Chapo and manufactured in his own workshop, France 1970s. This stool is made of solid elmwood has very nice constructed seat. The wood-joint connections of the crossed table legs are a typical feature used by Chapo, which makes this table instantly recognizable. This table features 3 solid elm wooden legs which have an a-symmetrical shape which makes it possible to construct the frame like this, using only some dowels to connect the feet to the seat. An ingenious system where construction plays a big part in the same team as gravity. The seat shows a nice patina from usage, the stool has a fantastic original well-kept patina from age which adds character. T21A table on the last pictures is for size reference only, this is available in another listing. The work of Chapo combines ancient woodworking skill and tradition with a contemporary approach. In designing his distinguished pieces, Solid oak, elm, teak and ash were mainly used. After graduating from the Parisian École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in architectural studies, he travelled through Scandinavia, Central America and the United States. After returning to the French capital, he opened his own gallery in 1958 on boulevard de l’Hôpital 14, where among other artists mainly his and Isamu Noguchi’s creations were on display. In 1960, he received a gold medal from the city of Paris as a token of appreciation for his contributions to the city. The work by Pierre Chapo is parallel to the designs by Charlotte Perriand. Due to the increase of demand for those pieces, Pierre Chapo’s work is highly sought after as its similar in many ways. Pierre Chapo is for sure one of the best designers from French soil, clearly to be seen at his architectural designs and craftsmanship.
