Max Stout Metal and Naugahyde Orange Sofa

About the Item

Very Rare sofa by North Carolina Blacksmith and furniture designer and maker Max Stout. Sofa is in complete original condition with original cushions (foam) and the original Orange naugahyde fabric. There is one small cut/nick to the wing back orange fabric on camera left (if looking at the front) of the sofa. Shown within an image. When we find a piece in original condition we sell the piece as it is and if needed can work with the customer to make adjustments prior or post sale. Wingback sofa with wooden arm rests in patinated metal and organe naugahyde. Our gallery is lucky enough to also have the same sofa in Black (listed on the site) as well as the coffee table to go between both sofas that is currently not listed and being re-finished. The spindle back is very attractive when exposed to the view of a room, compared to having to place it against a wall. Very long sofa able to accommodate 4 people at once. Perfect style of sofa for a commercial space as well. There is not a lot known about Max Stout but we have done our research and due diligence in finding corroborating stories about the designer of the piece. Max worked in High Point, North Carolina from the 1950s through the 1990s. Excerpt from a news article highlighting Stouts' prolificacy... "For them, he designs through six companies: Southern Seating, The Blacksmith Shop, Dinette Parts and New Products, all of High Point; Carolina Seating at Thomasville, N.C.; and The Fleet Line in Winston-Salem, N.C." Easy to say that Mr. Stout was working quite a lot. However, given the nature of his predominant customer "newly-marrieds and just starting careerists" (another excerpt from the same article) It is rare to come across his pieces in a preserved state as they were likely tossed in home re-decorations and renovations as metal may not have been something that was thought to be saved, even if for its design sensibility.
