Large 18th Century Italian Rococo Giltwood Sofa

About the Item

A Particularly Large Scale 18th Century Italian Rococo Giltwood Sofa. With its cloud-shaped back and arm supports and undulating, serpentine apron, this piece epitomises the elegance of 18th century Italian rococo design. The cabriole legs have a pronounced curve to them, matching the shape of the back, and the carved detailing and the engraved work in the gesso is impressively executed. Clearly made for a very large house or palazzo of some importance as few clients would have been able to afford to commission a piece of this delicacy. Italian furniture of this sort is hard to find and a sofa of this date and scale are hard to find regardless of country of origin. A really impressive and attractive piece of seat furniture.
