"Amphibious" Settee Sofa, Steve Chase, 1980's

Designed by Steve Chase in the 1980's this modern sofa was called the "Amphibious" sofa. With its super curvy, marshmallow shape and sumptuous cotton chenille fabric, this sofa is definitely a showstopper.
This gorgeous postmodern sofa came out of the most beautiful home in the Beverly Park neighborhood of Beverly Hills. The sofa was upholstered to match a Vladimir Kagan Serpentine sofa that my gallery has also acquired.
This sofa is currently in the gallery with a Paul Evans coffee table, flanked by a B&B Italia Le Bambole lounge chair and not only does this sofa hold its own, it steals the show. This sofa would look great in any Mid-Century Modern, modern, or postmodern environment. Great design, with curves for days.
Steve Chase (1945-1989) was an American furniture designer and interior decorator who gained recognition for his sophisticated and contemporary designs in the 1970s and 1980s. Born in Kansas City, Missouri, Chase moved to California in the 1960s, where he began his career in the design industry.
Chase's signature style was characterized by a mix of textures and materials, often combining leather, wood, metal, and stone to create bold and luxurious furniture pieces. His designs were modern and sleek, yet also warm and inviting, with a strong focus on comfort and functionality.
Chase's work was featured in numerous high-profile publications, including Architectural Digest and House Beautiful, and his clients included many prominent celebrities and business leaders. He designed furniture for the likes of Barbra Streisand, Robert Redford, and Joan Collins, as well as for luxury hotels and resorts around the world.
In addition to his furniture design work, Chase was also a respected interior decorator, and his projects included the Beverly Hills home of actor Alan Ladd, as well as the renovation of the California Governor's Mansion in Sacramento.
Chase was known for his attention to detail and commitment to quality, and his designs continue to be sought after by collectors and design enthusiasts alike. Despite his untimely death in 1989, his legacy lives on through his furniture designs and his contributions to the world of interior design.

Steve Chase
Steve Chase lived in and worked out of Palm Springs, California, but he created luxury spaces and furniture for projects that took shape all over the world. A consummate art collector and brilliant interior designer, Chase was involved in every aspect of the rooms he designed and attracted many high-profile clients, including Gerald and Betty Ford, Farrah Fawcett and Gene Hackman.
Chase was born in New Hampshire and attended the Rhode Island School of Design as well as the ArtCenter in Los Angeles. After completing his studies, he joined Arthur Elrod and Associates — a celebrated Palm Springs-based firm that created colorful interiors and furniture for a range of Hollywood stars and more during the height of the mid-century modern era. Chase worked with Elrod for more than a decade before establishing his own business in 1980.
Chase designed his furniture to meet the sensibilities and personalities of his clients, and his work ranged from the traditional to the tastefully unconventional. While he created sculptural brass side tables that boast striking brutalist forms, there were also understated chrome-framed coffee tables with fossil shell tops. For his seating, Chase’s palette ranged from bright pastels to modest earth tones, and his vintage sofas are known for their signature tufted-channel backrests and seats. The plush cushioning was most prevalent in his Monterey seating collection of chairs, sectionals and sofas manufactured by the firm Martin Brattrud Inc., which produced most of Chase's designs during the 1970s and '80s.
Chase supported a number of charitable organizations and strongly advocated for the Desert AIDS Project (DAP), a volunteer-led initiative to combat the HIV epidemic in Coachella Valley. He lent his design talents to improve their office space, and used his influence with celebrities to enlist their help on the project. Chase also joined the Contemporary Art Council Acquisitions Committee at the Palm Springs Art Museum and eventually bequeathed more than 130 works to the institution when he passed away in 1994.
In 1996, the DAP created the annual Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards to honor him. Today he is remembered for his humanitarian giving as often he is for his furniture designs and lively interiors.

This has to be one of the most beautiful sofas our gallery has ever had. This piece is early Italian1950's. Similar to pieces by Gio Ponti, Ico Parisi and Vladimir Kagan this large curved sofa features walnut legs and has been reupholstered in a fine, white, Belgian boucle.
The boomerang-shaped sofa is a true masterpiece that embodies the essence of Italian design. Italian modern design is known for its clean lines, bold shapes, and exquisite attention to detail, making them timeless pieces of art that have stood the test of time.
This particular sofa, is a stunning piece that exudes elegance and sophistication. The unique boomerang shape of the sofa is both stylish and practical, as it offers a comfortable seating experience while also being a visually striking addition to any room. The sofa is upholstered in a white Belgian boucle fabric, which adds to its luxurious appeal and complements its sleek design.
This boomerang shaped sofa measures 90" long on the longer side, and 75" long on the shorter side. This gorgeous sofa could fit into a corner, but hiding those 9 splayed cone legs, and curved back lines wouldn't quite do this sofa justice.
This vintage Italian piece is constructed with the highest level of quality. This sofa in particular has 8 way hand tied springs, the seating cushion has springs, the stuffing all horsehair and the upholstery was a worn mohair. We have remarkable photos documenting sofa before and during restoration.
While Gio Ponti is regarded as one of the most significant Italian designers; his contemporaries, such as Achille Castiglioni, Vico Magistretti, and Ettore Sottsass, also contributed to the world of Italian design. Castiglioni, for instance, was known for his playful and functional designs, while Magistretti was renowned for his minimalist aesthetic. Sottsass, on the other hand, was a pioneer of the Memphis Group, which was known for its bold and colorful designs.
