Philadelphia Chippendale Style Chair with Carved Ribbon-Back, circa 1840
About the Item
A very beautiful Rococo-Revival, Chippendale style chair in mahogany with ribbon-back carving. Exquisitely carved and articulated ribbon back framed by acanthus carved foliates. Chair knees and talloned claw feet are well-articulated. Slip seat is surrounded by a variation of an egg and dart motif carved on the top border of the seat rails. This is not a typical style of Chippendale chair that was produced during this period. The ribbon-back is a published style in Chippendale's compendium The Gentleman & Cabinet Maker’s Director but it is not a form that was often produced in the mid-19th century in Philadelphia. Original finish and patina. Philadelphia, circa 1840.
