18th Century Louis XV Period Settee/Bench/Canape

About the Item

Louis XV painted Canape, mid-18th century. Wonderful rare French settee with feminine cabriole legs. This is a very rare piece of the period. Louis XV. came to age in 1723. His personality had a considerable effect on the fashions of his day. Intelligent, cultured, he was a great lover of the arts. The healthy economic situation and the peaceful state of Europe aided the development of a new fashion in furniture and the decorative arts. Gone are the straight and restraint lines of the Baroque. Cabriolet legs abound on most pieces of furniture. Madame de Mailley and later Madame de Pompadour condributed largely to the creation of what we now call the Louis XV style. She followed the activities of the cabinet-maker and was always commissioning new furniture from them. She is undoubtetly the key to an understanding of French taste in the first half of the 18th Century. She gave it just that exquisitely graceful and feminine touch which still facinates us today. When Madame de Pompadour died in 1764, the public auctioneers had to work daily for eight months to dispose of all that she had amassed. The soft curves and gentle cabriolet legs of this settee remind us of the gracefullness of this period in France. The settee has been fully restored and upholstered in Muslin, waiting for a fine fabric. The frame has been reinforced as part of the restoration process.
