1950s Pierre Jeanneret 'Kangourou' Chandigarh Lounge Chair PJ-SI-59-A

About the Item

1950s Pierre Jeanneret 'Kangourou' 'Kangaroo' Chandigarh Lounge Low Chair model PJ-SI-59-A. This chair is made of Indian rosewood which was used in the earliest productions of Pierre Jeanneret Chandigarh furniture. The grain, patina and character of the wood is unmistakable and unique to the time and region of production. The production of these chairs was contracted out to many different small artisinal craftsmen in Chandigarh that did not adhere to strict dimensions and were produced in a very handmade way. A perfect illustration of this is how the holes drilled through the wood around the edges of the seat and the backrest have irregular spacing. They were also well used in the government offices of Chandigarh and were often sent out for repairs and re-caining which can be seen in this chair. We have decided to leave the chair in its original condition to preserve its history but will be willing to have it re-cained to a higher standard if requested by the buyer at no extra cost.
