Late 18th Century Harlequin English Lancashire Spindle-back Chairs Set of 4

About the Item

These mid 18th Century English Harlequin Lancashire chairs are an amazing reflection of a time when craftsmanship was uniquely individual, resulting in every chair being unique to others in their respective sets. These beautiful antique chairs are wonderful specimens of classic English country design, made from oak, ash and elm with a rich patina that holds original wax, rush seats and hand-turned pieces overall, from the spindles to the turned legs on ball feet, tied by double stretchers. While consistent in design, each chair reflects the skilled nuances of each maker, resulting in slight differences in each piece, from height to width to characteristics of each turn in the stretchers and spindles. The rush seats are extremely old showing minor wear that interestingly reveals old newspaper and traditional seat filling of the era in which is was most likely replaced.
