Henry Rosengren Hansen Dining Chairs for Roche Bobois, France Mid-20th Century

About the Item

This set of eight dining chairs was crafted by esteemed Danish designer Henry Rosengren Hansen, considered one of the most influential cabinetmakers of the 20th century. After studying at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, he worked at the Forbrugernes Samvirke firm (also referred to as FDB), kickstarting his design career. In the 1940s, he founded his own company - HRH - where he further developed his craft. His creations embodied Scandinavian Modernism with sleek, organic and timeless designs. Towards the mid-20th century, he collaborated with other furniture manufacturers including the french manufacturer Roche Bobois, where this unique set of dining chairs was brought to life. These Scandinavian modernist chairs reveal an appreciation for the quality of the materials used and excellent craftsmanship, making it a set deemed to last several lifetimes. These chairs are a testament to the emphasis on simplicity and organic form, prioritising clean lines and unadorned surfaces, embodying the ‘less is more’ principle. The frame of the chairs follows a beautiful rectangular symmetry, with legs tapering slightly and grounding the frame down. The back, consisting of two horizontal fine slats, offers the right amount of support and comfort for the sitter. The exquisite frame, in a dark solid wood, is further highlighted by the light colour of the seats’ upholstery. The choice of upholstery beautifully contrasts the off-white fabric with the rich wood, creating a visually eye-catching set. The colour and smooth texture of the wood reveals an intrinsic warmth and beautiful grain, further embellished by the exceptional woodwork. These dining chairs are a staple set deemed to elevate any dining interior. Although manufactured in France by Roche Bobois, they embody and reflect Scandinavian - specifically Danish - craftsmanship, with a focus on quality and function, making them an ideal choice for design enthusiasts. Roche Bobois, was established by the Roches and Chouchans families during the mid-20th century in Paris. Following a salon in Copenhagen, Denmark in the 1960s, Roche Bobois’ identity and brand was established following its success importing and selling furniture from Scandinavia. Roche Bobois since then focused mainly on Scandinavian artistry along with french furniture innovation. Today, Roche Bobois remains highly praised and amongst the few Parisian manufacturers to have global success. ‎Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use.
