Victorian Chinoiserie era Molded Plaster Chaise Percée Commode Chair

About the Item

This late 19th century "throne" is a fine example of elegant furniture making meeting functional necessity. Known as a "Chaise Percée" this type of furniture was common until the advent of widespread indoor plumbing at the beginning of 20th century. Economic level would dictate extravagance of design and this artful chair was no doubt from an upper class or aristocratic home. Formed of oak and iron with a veneer of plaster gesso depicting Asian scholars, plants and bats. At some point in it's life an affixed seat cushion was made upholstered in cotton velvet making it a functional decoration. Great conversation piece.
