Scandinavian Art Nouveau Skönvirke Chairs in Carved Oak, Denmark, 1930s

About the Item

Charming set of 4 Danish Skönvirke chairs in solid carved oak and wool upholstery fitted with nails. Skönvirke is the Danish parallel to Art Nouveau and Art Nouveau in continuation of the Arts and Crafts Movement, characterized by a simplified ornamentation and the use of plant and animal motifs as well as national features. The leading name in the decorative arts style is Thorvald Bindesbøll, who worked in all materials and techniques. A main monument for the style is Copenhagen's Town Hall, which was built and furnished with furniture and other fittings by Martin Nyrop. The common effort in the decorative arts industry, architecture and other design-related fields of the time was to establish a new style that responded to the challenges of the time, but it took many national forms. In Denmark, fine art was thus inspired by notions of a special Danish handicraft. Wood carvings, moorland sewing and pottery were linked with the national Danish identity revival from the 1830s onwards. Skønvirke thereby often merged with national romanticism. The national motifs often used medieval elements or, for example, the Norwegian rose ornamentation as a model.
