Pair of Italian Crab-Form Grotto Chairs, Attributed to Pauly et Cie, Venice

About the Item

These wacky 'Grotto' chairs were manufactured in Venice in response to the 19th century interior design craze for Grotto furniture. The trend originated with the European nobility of the 18th and 19th centuries, who designed and built whole rooms as shell-encrusted pavilions, to resemble grottos. These chairs are attributed to the Venetian firm Pauly et Cie, who were the leading makers of Grotto furniture in Europe in the late 19th Century; each chair has been expertly crafted in the form of a crab and decorated with a polychrome painted finish. They each feature a hinged back opening to reveal an upholstered velvet seat, all set on a naturalistic base in the form of a shell. Measure: The height of each chair when open is 108cm, and when closed 60cm.

By Jacob Kjaer
Located in Dallas, TX
These chairs are now upholstered in a cream and brown fabric with small geometric design. About Jacob Kjær, (1896-1957) After receiving training in the workshop of his father, who was a furniture maker, Jacob Kjar went to places like Berlin and Paris for further training. As a Snedkermester(1), he exhibited his works in Barcelona World Expo in 1929 and other events, and won many awards as well. Most of his works are characterized by simplicity in design, but, if you look closer, you will notice that their details are elaborately worked out to a surprising degree. He was a first-class furniture maker who made no compromise in his selection of materials, fabrication, structure, and working process. Chairs of Jacob Kjær have excellent design made possible by his knowledge and skills as furniture maker. He used only the finest materials including animal hair in his upholstery. Combined with careful hand crafting, furniture of the highest quality was produced. (1)Snedkermester: a title given to the most excellent furniture makers Additional information regarding Jacob Kjær Based in Copenhagen, Jacob Kjaer created many of his designs in his own workshop. They included the “FN Chair...
