Pair of Armchairs with Red Upholstery of the Regency Period

About the Item

A pair of Regency Period bergères After a Design by Thomas Sheraton Constructed from goncalo alves, the chairs with curved backs supported on reeded front legs and splayed legs to the rear, each with brass casters, the front rail blocks with carved paterae, issuing scrolling lappet volutes and exposed solid rosewood backrails. Each chair stamped with the journeyman’s initals “I.M.” English, Circa 1820 The design for this pair of tub chairs is derived from Thomas Sheraton’s Cabinet Dictionary, published in 1803. His influential designs may have inspired Thomas Hope—the father of interior decoration-- to design his own version in 1807. A nearly identical pair of armchairs sold Christie’s, London, 6 July 2000, Lot 77 (£56,400 GBP).
