Mid Century NY Folding Lounge Chair and Ottoman by Takeshi Nii, Japan, c. 1950's

About the Item

A permanent part of the collection of MOMA, the ‘NY’ chair is a highly respected example of modern design. First produced in 1958 by Japanese designer Takeshi Nii, the layout of the chair and ottoman were inspired by foldaway director’s chairs. It was named in honor of the designer’s family name, but it also means ‘new’ in Danish – a gesture of homage to the mid-century Scandinavian aesthetic. The ‘Ny’ chair and ottoman folds into a slender size when not required but offers a deceptively comfortable seating experience. Constructed of light-weight materials like aluminum and maple wood these chairs can be taken practically anywhere from the beach, to the porch or even on safari. With new canvas upholstery, indiscernible from the original canvas, this exceptional set is ready for decades more of use. Currently last two of original set of four available. Make them yours today before they're gone forever. ---Dimensions--- Chair Width: 22 in / 55.88 cm Chair Depth: 29 in / 73.66 cm Chair Height: 36 in / 91.44 cm Seat Height: 11 in / 27.94 cm Ottoman Width: 17.5 in Ottoman Depth: 16.5 in Ottoman Height: 16.5 in Condition Details: This expertly-designed and crafted lounge chair and ottoman set is in excellent condition and features new canvas upholstery indiscernible from the original material. The solid maple arms show only minor nicks and light scratches and the wood grain is gorgeous in natural light. The aluminum frames show minor signs of pitting and tarnishing but are not bent, cracked or broken in anyway. The canvas has been completely replaced with new materials painstakingly mimicking the original pattern, layout and color. These lightweight, folding chairs and ottomans are highly functional, extremely comfortable and ready for decades more of use. Please view all photos for details on this set's current condition.
