Mario Ceroli Chair mod. Sedia Alta, Manufactured by Poltronova, Italy, 1972 Russian pine wood structure. Signature of the artist and of the production in pyro engraving. It is part of the ‘Mobili nella valle’ series produced by Poltronova. Width 55 x Depth 51 x Height 193 Cm Literature: G. Gramigna, Repertorio 1950 - 1980, Mondadori, 1985, pag. 363. Mario Ceroli (born 1938) is an Italian sculptor, well known for having "abolished" the all-round in sculpture, resulting in an innovator of this technique, and has become famous for the introduction of a recurring figure, the silhouette. Ceroli used wood, his favorite material, to carve stylized human figures that he produced in series and placed side by side in sequence. In some cases, silhouettes were drawn.His work has been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City and the Mississippi Museum of Art in Jackson, Mississippi. Defining himself as an artist "faber" in the medieval sense of the perspective, he moves between reality and fiction, a common combination found in De Chirico's metaphysics. Another recurring theme of his production are the quotes from Leonardo da Vinci, in fact he produced several personal reworking of the famous Vitruvian Man, Wood is his favorite material and he was awarded the prize for young Italian sculpture in 1958. This propensity for materials of humble origin made him to all intents and purposes a forerunner of the Arte Povera group, and it is no coincidence that he participated with his works in some exhibitions of the collective at the end of the 1960s. In the sixties, Ceroli became very passionate about American Pop Art and in particular the works of Louise Nevelson and Joe Tilson, whose influences will be present in his works, especially in his famous silhouettes. One of the works of this type, Cassa Sistina, was also awarded at the Venice Biennale in 1966.
