IKEA ‘Vilbert’ Chair by Verner Panton, 1993, Post-Modern

About the Item

Verner Panton was one of the most influential figures in design history, pushing the boundaries of form and materials in the 1960s and 1970s. Launched in 1993 by IKEA and only in production for 1 year, Verner Panton’s iconic ‘Vilbert’ Chair is the epitome of Post-Modernity. Initially 3000 to 4000 Vilbert chairs were put into store by mass-producer IKEA, but sales were not so good as expected. Many of the chairs were taken out of the stores again, and word goes that chairs were even taken out of production to be destroyed. Nowadays these chairs have become rare items, fetching record prices on auctions. The listed chair is in a wonderful pre-owned condition, it has hardly been used to sit on. It is made from high-quality melamine board, with only slight signs of wear and it still shows the remains of the sticker on the backside. Huizenga NV Bastille Chair by Piet Blom, 1960s, De Stijl, Rietveld, Mondrian
By Piet Blom
Located in CULEMBORG, GE
Piet Blom was a famous Dutch architect, mostly known for his iconic Cube houses in Rotterdam and Helmond, The Netherlands. One of his early assignments was the design of a student restaurant for the Technical University Twente, called the ‘Bastille’. For this restaurant, Blom also designed the chairs, to be manufactured by Huizenga in 1965. Made of black and red lacquered wood, the ‘Bastille’ chair features a straight structure, round seat and curved back and legrest. With its unique constructivist shape, the chair is often seen as a homage to Gerrit Rietveld and De Stijl. Only 400 of these chairs were ever made and less than 200...

Set of 4 LOV Oosterbeek Chairs by J.A. Muntendam, 1920s, Hague School, Modernist
By L.O.V. Oosterbeek
Located in CULEMBORG, GE
Listed is a rare set of Modernist dining chairs, attributed to J.A. Muntendam — who was the artistic director of L.O.V. Oosterbeek in the late 1920s. L.O.V. is the abbreviation of Labor Onia Vincit which means 'Work conquers all’. In the days Dutch company L.O.V., based in Oosterbeek, was quite a famous factory. Historically they played a significant role with their progressive principles: L.O.V. was for example the first factory to introduce the modern 8-hours working day. L.O.V. designs toggle from being quite traditional to extremely modernist — in every piece of their furniture you feel that the spirit of Modernism...

Set of 4 Galvanitas Oosterhout NV S16 Compass Chairs, Dutch Design, 1950s
By Galvanitas
Located in CULEMBORG, GE
For sale is a lovely set of four Galvanitas S16 Compass Chairs, arguably the most iconic school chair ever produced. The first to design with sheet metal was obviously Jean Prouve, but in The Netherlands the experiments with these classic compass leg subframes really exploded in the 1950s. Friso Kramer and Wim Rietveld designed the similar looking Result Chair for Ahrend in the same period, but the S16 turned out to be the most successful —featuring in most schools and canteens of office- and government buildings. Made from a sheet steel frame with a fine laminated and formed seat and back by Pagholz, the iconic S16 Chair...
