Flower Chair by Philipp Aduatz

About the Item

Flower Chair by Philipp Aduatz Limited Edition of 24 Dimensions: D 58 x W 50 x H 90 cm Materials: Glass fiber and carbon fiber reinforced polymer, car paint. The Flower Chair by Philipp Aduatz was developed based on the Singularity Table. In a continuation of the theme, the Flower Chair focuses on the sensation of gravitational pull by a black hole. Figuratively speaking, the Flower Chair is obtained by bending one side of the Singularity Table upwards. The logical result relating to the form is a chair. As for the Singularity Table, the most important aspect of creating the Flower Chair was the combination of a scientific approach to design and the suitability for daily use. On the top side of the seat, the carbon fibers are visible through a transparent polymer layer. Thus the inner architecture of the chair becomes part of the design. Several prototypes were CNC milled in polystyrene to optimize the seating comfort. Rapid prototyping was implemented for developing the proportions of the Flower Chair. The name of the object is also connected to the design process in a special way: most people who glimpsed the early prototypes quickly associated them with a flower - and referring to that fact Aduatz named his object Flower Chair. Vienna-based Designer Philipp Aduatz (born 1982) creates limited-edition functional objects that are highly sculptural in nature. Working with innovative materials and fabrication technologies, Aduatz is very much influenced by scientific matters such as chemistry, physics, and material technologies. His process combines traditional craft concepts and techniques with cutting-edge implements such as 3D printing, 3D laser scanning, CNC milling, and Rapid Prototyping. The experimentation with different materials and their behavior is an important part of his research at the intersection of design and sculpture. Greatly influenced by sculptors such as Constantin Brancusi and Tony Cragg, the designer aims to develop a distinct language of form in each of his pieces, encouraging a new discourse between the object and its user or viewer.

Melting chair by Philipp Aduatz 2011 Edition of 12 + 3 A/P Dimensions: 95 x 93 x 78 cm Materials: Glass fibre reinforced polymer with a special silver coating New since 2012: special black chrome edition of 12 + 3 A/P Philipp Aduatz´ intention in the design of the Melting Chair is to capture a transient transformation within a sculptural object. The Melting Chair, which is suitable for use, is carefully crafted to appear to the viewer either as a solid chair melting away or as a solidification of a liquid melt. Usually, materials can be observed in certain aggregate phases: they can be solid, fluid or gaseous, but not at the same time. Only during phase transitions the borders between these phases become blurred. This moment of change seems utterly fragile and filled with fascinating possibilities at the same time. Aduatz main goal in the design of the Melting Chair was to hold on to this fleeting moment and phrase his fascination for it into a usable object. To create a realistic illusion, Aduatz studied the solidification of fluids as well as the melting of solids with modern 3D animation software. With this background, he designed the surface of the object down to the smallest detail - like an architect plans...
