Petite Antique French Carved Oak Hall Bench Breton Brittany Pew Chest Trunk. Direct from France, a wonderful petite antique French hall bench, with a charming combination of French style and versatile size. Intricate Brittany details include a carved upper rail over an open turned spindle panel with a large carved ship’s wheel design below, as well as a similar pattern on the lower front. Turned balusters support the sweeping carved arms; all of the panels are fully carved, include both side panels! Bench top lifts to provide generous interior storage. Quality throughout, pegged construction joints, well built by craftsmen of the period, circa 1890. Measurements: 39” ht. x 41” x 16.5”. 18.25” seat height. Brief note about Brittany Style Antique French Furniture The Celtic roots of the Brittany region of France are manifest in the furniture produced in this region. The Breton style is as distinctive as its special culture and easily recognizable due to its very ornate carvings. Historically, the local economy in Brittany was heavily dependent on fishing and maritime activities, so one often finds circles and ship's wheels as a common decorative motif in the Brittany Style of antique furniture. Often antique furniture in the Brittany Style was carved out of chestnut or oak, with a very dark finish. A hallmark feature of the Brittany Style of French Country Antique Furniture is the symbolic use of men and women in traditional Celtic dress to represent a strong work ethic, piety, and the enjoyment of life.
