18th Century Rustic Bench

About the Item

18th Century Rustic Bench is a fine example of rural craftsmanship utilizing time-honored techniques that were handed down from generation to generation for centuries in northern Europe. Utilizing dense, old-growth oak, a gently arched seat back was hand-hewn then fitted to the frame which was assembled with full-mortise & tenon joinery. The framework for the seat ties into the back as well as the front legs with this type of hand-fitted assembly, reinforced by the armrest which is double-pegged for decades if not centuries of daily use. The lower back consists of uprights fastened in the same manner forming a framework for no less than seven hand-chamfered panels. The generously sized seat, deeper than most from this period, was intended for use with a full width cushion, but remains surprisingly comfortable as is. An ideal choice for the rustic decor, it works great in any casual placement in the home or office. Circa 1780s Measures 36H x 70W x 24D; seat 15H
