set of four white steel armchairs "Cap d'Ail" by Mathieu Matégot, ca 1950

About the Item

rare set of four garden armchairs designed by Mathieu Matègot and named "Cap d'Ail" circa 1950 painted steel originale condition: many signs of rust the set comes directly from an original furniture of a garden of a Villa in Versilia, Italy Measures: h.83cm , 61 x 66 cm ; height seat: 40,5 The designer (1910-2001) was born in Hungary and settled in Paris in 1931. As an autodidact, he submerged himself in two fields: designing furniture and tapestry. Initially designed as outdoor furniture, this bench is defined by its poetic aura and excellent ironwork. The designer used quadrifoil perforated sheet metal that allowed him to create various shapes. A material that played a major role in the development of his signature style during the postwar era. This technique had already frequently been implemented in the work by esteemed French artists, among others René Herbst, Pierre Legrain, Étienne Kohlmann and Jean Bossu.
