Pair of Wingback Armchairs in Sheepskin, Europe 20th Century

About the Item

Wingback armchairs have a rich history and function, with the original purpose being to protect the face from fireside heat and to create a sense of privacy. The construction of this pair of armchairs revolves around high-quality materials, comfort, and the mastery of the era’s European cabinetmakers. These chairs in many ways transcend the word ‘modern’, thanks to their timeless look - exemplary of the artistry of highly skilled European craftsmen. The cabinetmaker behind the construction of this pair of wingback armchairs had a uniquely Scandinavian inspiration, clearly evident in their desire to retain elegance, functionality and comfort within the core of the design. This is especially visible in the backrests, gently tilted for added comfort, and the short tapered legs providing stability and balance for the ample bodies of the chairs. This set is reminiscent of Danish designer Fritz Hansen’s model “1582” armchairs; similarly, the armrests have a low and slightly outward curving shape that opens up the design, which creates an interesting look. The slightly titled frame has a high back support, with the so-called wings at the sides, that give the impression the chair is ready to embrace the sitter. The chairs are covered in a soft sheepskin that highlights their soft, curved shape. From every angle, these armchairs have a stunning silhouette and rich texture. Made out of solid wood, the tapered legs are splayed out below the seat, with the grain of the wood further enhanced by the contrasting light sheepskin upholstery. It is this detail of the construction that gives the chair an added refined and classic dimension to its modern look. European designers believed above all that design could certainly be used to improve people's lives, a sentiment made obvious with these armchairs. These chairs preserve the value and beauty of master craftsmanship and exquisite materials, making them everlasting, unique additions to any space. Condition: In good vintage condition. Pair of Wooden Armchairs with Upholstered Cushions, Europe 20th Century
Located in Utrecht, NL
With wedge and hammer, the chair-maker slowly creates shorter pieces to be worked into the seat, spindle, crest rail, and legs. This pair of wooden armchairs stands as a proud example of traditional design practice; their solid nail-free joints highlight the skill and artistry of its makers. This construction method enhances the armchairs’ structure and presents the reverence it deserves. This set borrows from great past examples, such as the Windsor chair or - more broadly - the spindle models widely used throughout Europe during the 20th century. These elements render this specific design truly timeless. They are among the most recognisable models of mid-century chairs in Europe. The spindle chairs are a ubiquitous classic that does just as well in the living room, dining room or even the hall, drawing every eye to it. The proportions are well-thought-out, and the see-through design adds a simple and airy touch. Each chair of this set has fifteen symmetrically arranged wooden slim spindles that form the back and armrests. A continuous arm and bow-back frame the slim spindles, offering a seamless joint from the seat and the back. The legs splay outward and run into the seat, which is a single wood piece slightly inclined to assist a more comfortable seating experience combined with the custom-made cushion upholstered in premium bouclé fabric. This model’s design is a classic that goes beyond trends, a product of a deep-rooted desire to showcase impeccable craftsmanship and a stylish aesthetic without compromising the quality of production or materials. This spindle chair set...
