Italian 17th Century Walnut and Leather Armchair

About the Item

This Italian armchair from 1680 may look like a throne, in fact it is a wonderfully patinated example of a friar’s chair–historically referred to as a “ sillon de frailero” type of chair found in abbeys. The friar’s armchair was initially an Italian design and quickly became associated with Spain and the colonies after its introduction in the 16th century. This wonderful armchair from the 17th century has a tall and sturdy frame carved from walnut, stretching a thick leather backrest and seat which are secured by two rows of nailheads. As this was not necessarily a chair for comfort, the lines of the arms and legs are mostly flat and straight to encourage good posture. Wonderful craquelure patina covers the dark leather, while the wood grain is marked densely patinated from nearly four centuries of use.
