1980’s Neoclassic Large Scale Armchair with Distressed Finish by Bernhardt

About the Item

Gorgeous vintage Neoclassic large-scale armchair with distressed finish & fixed seat & loose back cushions wearing taupe & beige fabric w/leaf details by Bernhardt from Vargas Fine Furniture. Beautiful condition, keeping in mind that this is vintage and not new so will have signs of use and wear even if it has been refinished or restored. Specifically, the cushions have been shampooed. And we have touched up a few nicks & dings in the painted distressed finish. Please see photos, zoom in for details, and see long description as they are part of the condition report. We attempt to portray any imperfections. Circa, 1980’s. Large Scale Armchair… EXTRAORDINAIRE!!!!! That’s right!! This is an EXTRAORDINARY vintage large scale armchair from Vargas Fine Furniture by Bernhardt… What a SCORE!!!! Although some of you may not be familiar with Vargas Fine Furniture, as a former Topeka, Kansas resident I am here to tell you that they only sold the BEST of the BEST of the BEST furnishings with elite designers on staff and could order to the trade. Their inventory consisted of only VERY high end, quality merchandise until they closed their doors in the 1990’s. This armchair is indicative of their premier products featuring it’s overscale frame with a Contemporary take on the Neoclassic form, swooped arms, fabulous fluted tapered legs, marvelous carved designs featuring a sculpted, carved X back, and an overall delightfully distressed white finish with silver details. The deep seat cushion and loose back cushion wear a lovely fabric covered in taupe & beige leaves that will blend in beautifully with many styles of décor. It would be wonderful in a corner of your bedroom, in your dressing area, next to an accent table in the family room, at the door in the entry, or across from your sofa in the family room. It is sure to make a big, bold, and quite BEAUTIFUL statement in whichever room you choose. Bernhardt Furniture was established in 1889 by John Mathias Bernhardt and has been going strong for over 125 years. He spent many years out west in Oregon Territory. After a serious illness, traveling back home to Lenoir, North Carolina, and working as a logger in the densely forested foothills of Grandfather Mountain. He went to work for Caldwell Land and Lumber Company and while working there he convinced them to build a railroad to move lumber and supplies. He then purchased his own sawmill and began buying timber. The next step of manufacturing his own furniture followed soon after bringing the birth of Bernhardt Furniture. He became known as a man of integrity, giving back to his community and for producing high quality furniture. A legacy was born. It was carried on and improved upon by his sons, George Bernhardt and John Christian Bernhardt, and eventually his grandson, Alex Bernhardt Sr. Through the years they grew, expanded, diversified, bought other companies, sold other companies, created divisions, and let them go. Two important names in all the comings and goings were Flair and Hibriten. Bernhardt Furniture remains a family owned company with Alex Bernhardt Jr. is now the 4th generation to be involved. They continue John Mathias’ legacy of integrity, high-quality furnishings, and giving back to their community. Stunning appearance, superb quality, impeccable style, AND a Bernhardt (& Vargas!) reputation to BOOT!! Vintage Mid-Century Modern Club Lounge Chair by Flair Division for Bernhardt
By Bernhardt
Located in Topeka, KS
Handsome Mid-Century Modern club chair or lounge chair from the Flair Division of Bernhardt Furniture. It is in wonderful vintage condition and wearing its original light turquoise blue nubby fabric. It has been professionally cleaned but the fabric does have fading as you would expect and there are still stains but no holes or tears. It will be at its best recovered. It is priced accordingly. Please see photos, circa 1960s. I must tell you when we walked into the home where we obtained this chair and many of our other recent and soon to be offerings, I thought if I was ever going to faint this is the time. Of course, the house itself blew me away and then……the original furniture and art in all its glory. This chair is part of a three-piece living room suite by Bernhardt Furniture Flair Division and we are offering all three pieces this week. This club chair with its Lawson styling and loose cushions is really comfy; plus, it is held up off the floor with a fabulous base. The base or legs are comprised of a pair of walnut planks turned upright and running from front to back on each side of the chair. Simple yet dynamic.
