Handmade 1960s Black Red Brown Striped Wool Rug Throw Geometric Designs Vintage

About the Item

A handmade wool rug in black and brown, with both stripes and geometric designs. This rug has an eye catching pattern in reds, yellows, blues and greens and although it has the vintage look it can easily match with several interiors. Originally imported from Greece – specifically the mountainous Taksiyarhi village, which is famous for its handmade rug production on looms. The tradition is that young girls, in preparation for their marriage dowry, produce a huge amount of textile products with the help of their mothers and grandmothers. When the time comes to get married they have to display their wares to their village, taking them to their groom's house whilst accompanied by music. The dowry law in Greece ended in 1982, but the tradition continues to this day. CREATOR: Unknown PLACE OF ORIGIN: Greece DATE OF MANUFACTURE: 1960 PERIOD: 1960-1969 MATERIALS & TECHNIQUES: Fabric, Cotton, Wool. The stitch in the middle indicates the width of the loom, at the end they would stitch the two pieces in order to make it wider.
