Late 19th Century Lavar Kerman Carpet
About the Item
The city and province of Kerman is geographically isolated in the great desert of southern Persia. An industry of both shawl and carpet production has flourished there since the Safavid Dynasty of the sixteenth century. Carpets produced here, once commissioned by the Shahs, came under the control of foreign industry in the early twentieth century. The fine weave of these carpets promotes the utilization of intricate curvilinear floral patterns rendered in a wide range of colors. Distinctive red tones are sourced from cochineal, an insect indigenous to the region that produces magnificent hues of magenta and coral.
This carpet has a large central medallion on an ivory field flanked by scrolling vinery all within a sky-blue palmette and leaf border. In very good overall condition, 12' 9" x 8' 11".

19th Century Persian Kerman Lavar Runner
Located in Barrington, IL
This exquisite Lavar Kerman runner from the late 1800s is a true rarity—both in format and artistry. Lavar Kerman rugs, renowned for their refined floral designs and exceptional craftsmanship, are seldom found in runner form, making this piece exceptionally desirable.
The allover floral pattern is rendered in a sophisticated palette of French blue, soft pink, ivory, and rich red, gracefully woven into a field of timeless elegance. Perhaps the most unique feature is the exquisite border: a flowing arrangement of vibrant red flower bouquets set against an unusually rare green background—creating a stunning visual contrast and a harmonious frame for the composition.
Woven in southern Persia in the historic city of Kerman—a major cultural and artistic center along the ancient Silk Road—this runner is not only a work of textile mastery but also a piece of living history. Its delicacy, balance, and palette reflect the artistic spirit of a region long celebrated for its contribution to Persian rug weaving.
