Hand Knotted Antique Rug in Beige-Brown All-Over Floral Pattern

About the Item

Hand knotted in wool originating from India circa 1880-1890, this 12 x 18 antique rug represents a rare large-size Agra rug of further exceptional color and refined pattern—revered among the most sought-after Classic rug families seldom enjoying such good condition in this near palace size. On the design: This particular antique Agra rug enjoys a take on the Classic Herati pattern, referred to in many circles as the fish pattern for the graceful curvature of the floral pattern—exemplified here in the richest burgundy color for a natural sense of movement against the beige-brown background. A notably desirable marriage of regal air and soothing repetition among traditional rug styles, well suited in rare large size to main dining rooms, main living rooms, and similarly discerning grand rooms.

Antique Persian Mahal rug with Ivory, Pink, All-Over Pattern, hand knotted wool
Located in Birmingham, AL
8’7 x 12’8 Circa 1910-1920s. Mahal weavers we’re so creative! These are some of my favorite rugs because they are incredibly well made and so artistic. Have you ever seen a piece like this?? Excellent condition! The ivory field is very rare for these pieces. One end is finished with traditional fringe and the other has a small flatweave finish. This is woven from the leftover warp and weft on the loom. I find this finish to feel organic and is such a nice textural change from the exactness of the wool pile. The fact that this small flatweave end is so well preserved tells us that this rug has been well cared for and well preserved for all of its long life. The Oriental carpets from Mahal were a product of the cottage industry in and around this Northwest Persian village, and were often produced on the family level. Therefore, they use the loose to moderate weave, and somewhat thicker pile, similar to nomadic and tribal rugs. Nevertheless, they have now taken an equal seat beside the highly reputed and more finely knotted Ferahan and Mahajiran Sarouk...
