Hand-Knotted Antique Doroksh Persian Rug All Over Pattern

About the Item

A spacious 13 x 15 antique Doroksh rug from the most distinctive Persian Rugs in our collection. Hand knotted in wool circa 1880–1890, this rare piece boasts the mesmerising union of design and colour, painstakingly crafted as an overall Herati field pattern in luxurious brown tones—further enjoying a rare black background and pink accents complementing the repetition with whimsy and life. On the design: Celebrated in Persian rugs, the Mahi or Herati field pattern is characterised by floral designs encapsulated in a diamond like pattern. The curling leaves resemble a fish which lends an air of exclusivity to the design. This fish-like resemblance of the design got coined as mahi which translates to fish in Farsi.

Antique Persian Mahal rug with Ivory, Pink, All-Over Pattern, hand knotted wool
Located in Birmingham, AL
8’7 x 12’8 Circa 1910-1920s. Mahal weavers we’re so creative! These are some of my favorite rugs because they are incredibly well made and so artistic. Have you ever seen a piece like this?? Excellent condition! The ivory field is very rare for these pieces. One end is finished with traditional fringe and the other has a small flatweave finish. This is woven from the leftover warp and weft on the loom. I find this finish to feel organic and is such a nice textural change from the exactness of the wool pile. The fact that this small flatweave end is so well preserved tells us that this rug has been well cared for and well preserved for all of its long life. The Oriental carpets from Mahal were a product of the cottage industry in and around this Northwest Persian village, and were often produced on the family level. Therefore, they use the loose to moderate weave, and somewhat thicker pile, similar to nomadic and tribal rugs. Nevertheless, they have now taken an equal seat beside the highly reputed and more finely knotted Ferahan and Mahajiran Sarouk...
