1890s Antique Persian Kashan Carpet, Afshan Design in Kork Wool, 10' x 16'

About the Item

This 19th century Persian Kashan carpet with Afshan design was completed in kork wool, circa 1890. Kork wool, used only in weaves of particular fineness, is wool of exceptional quality taken from the neck of the lamb. Its extremely high lanolin content gives it a silky and velvety texture, and to weave with such wool is very delicate and time consuming work. Also very unique to this carpet was that it was created by order of the Armenian merchant Ava Kian, famous for bringing some of the first Fine Persian carpets to the United States in the 19th century. Its colors of soft reds, pinks and blues were created using natural vegetable dyes, and its Afshan design exhibits motifs of floral bouquets, cypress trees, and butterflies. It is an exceptional one-of-a-kind carpet in excellent antique condition. The size is 10' x 16'3".
