Caucasian Rug Ghenge All-Over Design, Late 19th Century
About the Item
This magnificent antique Caucasian runner measuring 360 × 110 cm (11' 9" × 3' 7") was hand knotted around 1880 in the Ghendje region, which borders the territory of Shirwan to the northeast, Karabagh to the south and Kazak to the west. At the time of the Persian Empire, the name of the capital was Ghendje, today's Kirovabad. The fleece is in shiny and elastic wool, the warp and weft are made of undyed natural wool. Interlocking horizontal bands of stylized botehs decorate the field of the rug; diagonal bands decorate the main frame, enclosed between two secondary frames of carnations and additional two of small rhomboidal geometric figures. The chromatic scale of this rug is rich, with an abundance of creamy white, yellow, light blue, bottle green, cochineal red and intense brick red, which stand out against the dark blue background. Can you imagine this stylish rug in your home?.
