Rare & Stylish Pair of 1920s Porcelain French Art Deco Risque Dancer Bookends

About the Item

These Art Deco risque dancers (or 'Moulin Rouge') bookends are very rare and very pretty to look at. This finest quality porcelain pair of female risque dancers from the heydays of the French Art Deco era is another one of our recent great finds and the elegant dancer sculptures are in very good condition. It is amazing, but these rather fragile and all handcrafted bookend sculptures do not have a single chip or crack on or in them. With these stylish performing artists not wearing any tops, these bookends exemplify what a leap forward the (western) world was taking in the 'roaring twenties'. The first owner of a pair like this would have been a wealthy and broad minded male or female. A worldly citizen, so to speak. Their size and design don't make them particularly practical as bookends, but when smartly placed besides some sturdy standing books these works of art are highly decorative and they also make great talking pieces. Have you also noticed the gilt base and highlights in these pure Art Deco sculptures? There is some natural wear to the gilding of the base, because that is where these sculptures will always we touched when they are picked up (because that is the safest way to handle them). Apart from a vagely visible number in the bottom, unfortunately they are not marked, but these quality antiques can only have been made by one of the great French designers and/or sculptors. If you like the great style and the look and feel of these pure French Art Deco bookends as much as we do then you will love our price. Especially when taken into account that perfect packing (in a custom made box) and free worldwide delivery from our store to your door in just 4 to 6 days are included. Maximum height x width x depth: 7.9 x 5.5 x 2.3 inches. We have a passion for the unique, for quality, for stylish yet practical and for craftsmanship of years gone by. Your purchases will be extremely well packaged and we look forward to serving you (again).  You can shop all our 1000+ listings by pushing the button that reads 'View All From Seller'.

Rare Art Deco Bookends, Indian Sculptures in Meditating Position on Marble Base
Located in Lisse, NL
Unique on 1stdibs and possibly worldwide. It was in the early 20th century that meditation became known in Western society. Like many artists, the one who handcrafted the sculptures that were used to create these bookends probably traveled through Indonesia or India. These creative minds came back full of inspiration of all they had witnessed, because certainly back then, they entered a whole new world. The meditating males on these marble based bookends are made of silvered brass and the artist perfectly captured their serene faces, their turban head wear and their relaxed bodies. Sitting with their minds at rest and with their consciousness in the entire body or possibly focussed on breathing only, they would certainly arouse interest with western travelers...
